Description:
Dominica lies between Guadeloupe and Martinique. While the "Nature Island of the Caribbean" has a tourism industry, there are no high-rises, neon-lit casinos or dazzling hotel complexes. Instead, the emphasis is on the natural environment, exploring its towering mountains, crystal-clear streams, boiling hot springs and diverse plant and animal life.
The group will live near the capital city of Roseau. Working with the Ministry of Community Development, volunteers may help with daycare centers and preschools, work on a series of light construction projects, or paint senior citizens homes and children's camps. Past individual internships have included tutoring street children at Operation Youth-Quake, volunteering at a home for the elderly, and assisting the forestry department in cutting trails and other environmental concerns. English is the official language, with Creole being spoken in the interior villages.
Natural wonders like Boiling Lake, Trafalgar Falls and Emerald Pool, are fantastic for weekend explorations. So is the Carib Territory, where descendants of the island's original inhabitants practice native crafts - famous throughout the Caribbean. Your "end of trip wrap-up" may include a sail to a nearby island.
