  • Description:

Summer study in France with the Barat Foundation is a total experience combining morning academic study with exciting non-classroom afternoon, evening, and weekend activities and excursions.

You will be living in Provence not as a tourist, but as a local, as you attend the spectacular summer festivals of Avignon and Aix-en-Provence, visit Van Gogh's city of Arles, and shop at colorful open-air markets. You will visit the Camargue nature preserve and sun bathe along the beaches and shores of the azure Mediterranean. At the end of the day, you can linger at an open-air café or venture home to discuss the events of the day with new friends.

Your stay in Provence finds you at a fully equipped country estate with outdoor swimming pool. Our French teachers and staff will personally introduce you to France, its language, culture, history and art. Living in a truly international environment with students from all over the world, you will develop skills which will prepare you for life in the global marketplace of the 21st Century, where national borders and language cease to separate one people from another and where knowledge and understanding are the international currency.

The Barat Foundation Summer Program in Provence is designed to combine academics with real-life experience to enable the learning to come alive. Our classroom extends to all aspects of daily life as we shop at the boulangerie (bakery), visit the marché (market), linger at a café sipping a citron pressé (lemonade), and attend the internationally renowned summer music and theater festivals of Avignon & Aix-en-Provence.
Class size is limited and students are grouped according to language proficiency. Classes are taught by French nationals in as much French as possible. We accept all levels of French from beginner students with no foreign language experience to fluent speakers. Your language skills will develop at a rate you never imagined possible as you take your French out of the classroom and onto the streets and cafés of the region.

A variety of arts workshops, taught by our artists in residence, are an integral part of the program. Students can choose from a variety of workshops covering a range of artistic disciplines including photography, film, creative writing, theater, fashion design, dance, French cuisine, and installation art. Each atelier "workshop" works towards a cumulative project to be presented by the end of the session, be it a performance, a photo exhibition, an art installation, a short story, or dance.

Provence: The south of France is where the French vacation for the summer, and we will be joining them on the white sand beaches and numerous country festivals, concerts, and open-air markets that have charmed guests for centuries. We will be taking frequent excursions to explore and enjoy the wonders of the area. Accompanied by our French teachers, we will have the opportunity to immediately apply what we learn in our enrichment classes as we explore ancient Roman ruins, medieval castles, cathedrals, museums and monuments with a new understanding of their significance and place in history.
