Description:
For 86 years Waukeela has provided a spirited and adventurous environment where girls 8-16 develop into self-confident young women, at home in both the natural world and the human community. Our non-competitive program features small group instruction in horseback riding, waterfront and target sports, and both performing and creative arts activities in camp. We do not provide instruction in any team sports. Singing - of the loud, spontaneous, in-the-shower-because-you-feel-good kind - is the signature activity at Waukeela, occurring at every meal and just about any time in between.
Waukeela also offers the most extensive outdoor adventure trips program of any girls camp in New England. These include day and overnight hiking, rock-climbing, and canoeing trips throughout the wilderness areas of New Hampshire, Maine, and eastern Canada. All of these trips are entirely optional. Overnight accomodations for our youngest campers include stays in Appalachian Mountain Club huts, while older girls will carry their own provisions/equipment and camp out on the trail or river they are following.
From a child's perspective, Waukeela is all about fun, adventure, and friendships. Our older girls will tell you it's also about feeling free from the pressures they experience at home and getting away from modern media and computers to spend time in a simpler, more natural world. From a parental perspective, Waukeela is all about helping your child make connections that matter - developing friendships based on shared experience, understanding and respect, and finding healthy role models and mentors who will guide girls through the formative years of their lives. It's also about helping her develop independence and a balanced sense of self and community in a safe, joy-filled and healthy environment.
Whatever your perspective, there's a whole lot of good stuff going on! We hope you'll take a closer look...
Waukeela “My name is Waukeela. I have cabins all over. I am filled with girls of all ages in the summer. I am trees, water, and happiness. I am never lonely because there is so much going on. I am rich with love and words of the day. I am made up of girls from all ages. My hair is pine trees. My mouth is Crystal Lake. It is sparkling all over. My heart is the girls. My stomach is the food Gene makes. The tennis courts are red with flavor and the fields green. My eyes are the girls in Crystal Lake. I am over 80 years old but I am still youngl. I am happy when I see people laughing and having fun. My eyebrows are the paths all over camp. When the wind blows, I am laughing. When its raining, I am crying. When there is thunder, I am dancing. My fingers are the soft flowers waiting to be picked. My toes are the rocks and roots which everyone trips over. My brain is the rich soil that keeps going down with knowledge. My ears are girls laughing. In the morning I get woken up by birds chirping. At night I hear the crickets rubbing their wings together which puts me to sleep.”……… Holly, age 10
Why I Want to Attend Camp “I want to return to Waukeela to see old friends and meet new people. I want to fill my summer with something exciting, an experience I will remember. I want to play Capture the Flag under the pine trees, do archery, pottery and go boating on Crystal Lake. I want to be away from normal suburban life and see the beautiful forests and mountains of New Hampshire. I want to hear the bugle play “Taps” before bed. I want to play cards in the cabin after the lights go out, sing songs and laugh uncontrollably with my friends. I want to enjoy the luxury of the extensive showers. I want to taste the great food. I want to spend my summer somewhere I know I will have fun. I want to be out of school and away from my piles of homework. I know I had a great time at Waukeela, and I want to go back.”……..
